Dear Colleagues,
Today, CDC will begin airing a new round of hard-hitting ads from the Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) campaign on national television, in magazines, and online. The 2018 ads feature participants sharing their stories about serious health conditions such as oral, throat and lung cancer, as well as heart disease and stroke, caused or worsened by smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke. Ads from previous years’ campaigns will also run. The 2018 campaign will run for 25 weeks, from April 23rd to October 14th, in every media market in the country. The ads will be available for viewing on the Tips website, along with other useful campaign resources described below.
Please take a moment to review the following information to learn more about the Tips campaign and how you can help support it by sharing important life-saving messages and resources. We hope this information will be of value and help you provide support to people in your own community who want to quit smoking. |
CDC Feature Article: New Tips From Former Smokers® for 2018
The article profiles three of this year’s ad campaign participants – Christine, Sharon, and Brian – and includes a link to Brian’s video in which he talks about the six chronic health conditions he has experienced due to smoking. This feature also includes information on how to access free quitting resources. Please be sure to send the link to this article to members of your listservs.
The OSH features page provides a convenient link to the CDC feature article, along with quitting resources and social media tools. |
Tips Website Resources
OSH has created two new Tips web pages that can help smokers quit for good. The new pages include “Five Reasons Why Calling a Quitline Can Be Key to Your Success,” and “Top 10 Questions People Ask About Quitlines.” These helpful resources can help smokers understand how quitlines work, while answering common questions and addressing general concerns. The web pages promote quitline numbers in English, Spanish, and four Asian languages (Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Cantonese).
CDC.gov/tips has free resources for you to use, promote, and share, including:
• Biographies and video interviews with the ad participants
• Overviews of health conditions featured in the campaign
• Spanish-language content
• Guide for Quitting Smoking – practical tips for quitting smoking
