The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Partnership for Patients have developed a new campaign to encourage family caregivers to "Do the WAVE" to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). HAIs lead to tens of thousands of deaths and can have devastating medical, emotional, and financial consequences for patients and their families. However, proven protective behaviors, such as washing hands; asking questions of healthcare providers; vaccination; and safe use of catheters and other medical devices can reduce HAIs.

Family caregivers have an important role to play in preventing HAIs. This is made simple and actionable through the ad, which encourages them to "Do the WAVE": Wash or clean hands; Ask questions; Vaccinate against flu and pneumonia; and Ensure safety of medical equipment.
